What is a WhatsApp AI sales agent, and do you need one?

What is a WhatsApp AI sales agent? How it differs from a chatbot, what it does and does not do, and which Kenyan businesses actually need one.

A WhatsApp AI sales agent is software trained on your business that answers customers on your WhatsApp number within seconds, day and night. It quotes your real prices, explains your services, asks the questions that separate buyers from browsers, books appointments and passes the chat to a person when it should. It is not a menu-driven chatbot.

What happens to a message sent at 10:30 at night?

This example is illustrative, not a real case.

Just after 10:30pm, someone scrolling Instagram spots a dress on your page and sends your WhatsApp a single line asking the price. By then you are asleep. At 8am you reply with the price, the sizes and your delivery options. No answer. Overnight they asked two other shops, and one of them replied while they were still holding the phone.

That sale never appears in your books as lost. There is no complaint, no cancelled order, nothing to count. This is why slow replies can go unnoticed for years. We look at the research on this in why a slow WhatsApp reply loses the sale.

Now replay the night with an agent on the number. Within seconds the customer has the price, a photo in their size, a question about where to deliver and your Till number. That is the job.

What does a WhatsApp AI sales agent actually do?

The agent WeAutomate sets up does the following:

  • Replies usually in under 20 seconds, at any hour, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Knows your business. It is trained on your prices, services, FAQs, documents and website.
  • Speaks the customer’s language. English, Swahili or Sheng, whichever the customer writes in.
  • Qualifies the lead. It asks the questions you would ask, so your team calls the serious buyers first.
  • Books appointments into your Google Calendar, confirms in the chat and sends a reminder. See how the booking works.
  • Follows up leads that go quiet, up to three rounds, and stops the moment they reply.
  • Understands voice notes, photos, screenshots and PDFs, and replies in writing.
  • Hands over to a person. You watch every chat and can take over any of them from your dashboard.

The handover matters more than it looks. An agent that recognises what it should not handle, and passes the chat to you with the context, protects your reputation better than one that guesses.

How is an AI agent different from a chatbot?

People use the two words as if they meant the same thing. In practice they behave very differently.

Anyone who has pressed “0” again and again trying to reach a human already understands the difference.

Does it only work on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp comes first for good reason. The Communications Authority of Kenya, in its audience report published in April 2026, calls Facebook and WhatsApp the most widely used social media platforms in the country.

Plenty of enquiries still begin elsewhere, on an Instagram post or a Facebook ad. On WeAutomate’s Business and Enterprise plans, the same agent also answers Instagram DMs and comments, Facebook Messenger and a chat window on your website. It can reply to a comment on your post or ad and carry on in the DM. The Starter plan covers one WhatsApp number.

Which businesses need one?

A simple test: if a message that sits unanswered overnight can cost you a customer, an agent is worth a look. That covers most businesses that sell through enquiries:

Which businesses do not need one?

If customers mostly phone you during office hours, an agent will not help much. It works in chat and does not make or answer calls.

And if you receive a handful of messages a day and reply within minutes, the WhatsApp Business app with a few saved replies may be all you need for now.

What is a WhatsApp AI sales agent not?

Plenty of sales pages promise more than any agent can deliver. Here is the plain version.

  • It only knows what it is given. Clear prices, services and answers make for clear replies. Guesswork in, guesswork out.
  • It is not a replacement for your staff. It takes the repeated questions so your team has time for the conversations that need a person.
  • Speed will not save a weak offer. If customers do not want the product at that price, a quick reply only tells them sooner.
  • It does not take phone calls. It works in chat only.
  • It does not confirm M-Pesa payments. WeAutomate’s agent shares your Paybill or Till and hands the chat to your team to confirm.
  • It is not a tool for messaging strangers. Broadcasts on WeAutomate go only to people who already know your business. Mass messaging people who never contacted you is how numbers get blocked.

What does it cost?

That depends on whether you run a tool yourself, pay a provider to run it for you or pay a developer to build one. There is also Meta’s side: its developer documentation says that from 1 October 2026 Meta will charge per message for service replies on the WhatsApp Business Platform. We set out published prices and Meta’s fees in what a WhatsApp AI agent costs in Kenya in 2026.

Where WeAutomate fits

WeAutomate sets up and runs a WhatsApp AI sales agent for your business, done for you. A team in Kenya learns your business, builds and trains the agent, connects your WhatsApp and Google Calendar, and tests it before it goes live. Then they host, monitor and tune it every month. Setup is free. Starter is KES 10,000 a month and Business is KES 15,000 a month, with no long contract. Meta’s message fees are billed by Meta where they apply. Questions

Is a WhatsApp AI sales agent the same as an auto-reply?

No. An auto-reply sends the same message to everyone, such as 'we will get back to you'. An AI sales agent reads what the customer asked and answers it, using your real prices and services, then asks a sensible next question or books the appointment.

Will customers know they are talking to an AI?

Some will guess, and it is better to be open about it than to pretend. What customers mostly care about is a fast, correct answer and a real person when they need one. With WeAutomate, you or your staff can take over any chat from your dashboard at any time.

Can a WhatsApp AI sales agent close a sale on its own?

It can take a customer from first question to a booked appointment or a ready order without help. For payment, WeAutomate's agent shares your Paybill or Till and hands the chat to your team to confirm, because it has no native M-Pesa integration.

How long does it take to get one running?

With WeAutomate, a few days for most businesses and the same day for simple setups. The team learns your business, builds and trains the agent, connects WhatsApp and Google Calendar, and tests it before it talks to a customer. Setup is free.
